Problem with input signals

Hello.

I have a 26" 1996 Magnavox, model RF4552 CH03

The input signals from the 75 ohm coaxial connections are connected and the signals have always worked until recently. Now it works intermittently. Sometimes there's just static on all connections and I have to turn off the TV for a few hours. It's getting to the point where it's only working for 5 minutes then it goes back to static.

Could it be a problem with the tuner?

@magnavox26inch we can't even find your model :-) Which Country are you in? Is this a CRT TV? Would you mind posting a picture of the label on the TV with your Question? Adding images to an existing question

Hi @magnavox26inch

Have you checked all of the coax connections between the antenna and the TV input i.e. coax cable connection on the antenna, any coax plug/sockets in line between the antenna and the TV and the cable plug that plugs into the TV, to make sure that they're all OK and not loose, corroded etc?

Maybe it is best to try and isolate where the problem is first and then proceed from there.

Can't find a manual for the TV so what other signal input types does it have?

If for example there's an AV input (yellow video + red/white audio RCA sockets) on the TV, then if you have a set top box or pvr etc you could try connecting the antenna coax cable to it and then connect from the STB to the TV's AV input, tune for the stations in the STB (or pvr etc) and check if the signal remains OK.

If it stays OK then it may be the tuner in the TV. If still faulty it may be the antenna or the coax cable.

I've checked all the coaxial cables. I have 2 devices that I switch between. The digital converter box and an old super nintendo game. The problem affects both when it occurs. Just pure static no matter which input I switch to.

I just hooked RCA cables to the TV from the converter box and it's working again, at least for watching TV.

I wonder where I can order a new/used tuner. I'm also attempting to get a schematic from justradios.com

@magnavox26inch

Is the tuner on a separate board or is it part of the mainboard?

In either case, look for a board or part number on the tuner (or mainboard if it is on there) and if there is, try searching for that online.

Usually with TVs etc, the same part can be used in different models (and even makes of TVs) but a parts seller may not know this and doesn't list your model as being compatible. Worth a try anyway.

Cheers

@magnavox26inch

Assuming that the TV has a digital tuner how was the Super Nintendo connected to the TV as I thought that the video signal from it was an analogue signal?

If the TV has an analogue tuner I'm assuming that the converter box translates the digital TV signal from the antenna to an analogue signal to the TV or is there still analogue TV broadcast in your location?

This TV was made in 1996 and does not have a digital tuner. I use the converter box to take digital broadcast signals and convert them to analog so the TV can show them. The SNES is also connected to a coaxial analog input.

I ordered A/V cables for the SNES so I can bypass the tuner, since I had success doing this with the converter box.

I have not opened the back of the TV yet. I'd like to get a schematic first before digging into it. I do have some experience fixing old TV's but it's been many years.
