Try Ford Explorer forums where owners share experiences, help, and more. Diagnosing EFI systems can be complicated or easy, depending on knowledge of EFI systems. Simply put, the crank sensor must supply the electronic clock signals to the ecm in order for the ecm to operate the entire EFI system; fuel pump, injector pulses and ignition system for spark. Presuming fuses were checked to eliminate ecm/injector/fuel pump power, narrowing the problem down may be to either a fuel or spark issue. A fuel test valve on the fuel rail with a fuel pressure gauge connected can tell you if pressure is available for inector operation. Removing spark plugs after several failed starting attempts should reveal wet, raw fuel to indicate inector operation. A spark test can be performed in one of two ways; actual spark testing or spraying starting fluid into the throttle body and see if the engine starts up.
