Trackpad and keyboard both not working - MacBook Air A2179

About two months ago, both Trackpad and Keyboard have both stopped working on my 2020 Macbook air retina at the same time. At first, the keyboard was acting erratic and the touchpad took a while to respond to my inputs. After closing the laptop and leaving it for 2 hours, both the trackpad and keyboard are no longer functional. I attempted a system update which made everything worse; now instead of going to the login screen, I am prompted with "an update is required to use this startup disk" along with a really slow boot time. I tried replacing the trackpad cable myself but this did not work and the keyboard and trackpad are still not working.

NOTE: device purchased in July 2024 secondhand

Update: I’ve purchased a new trackpad connector daughterboard. Will update once it arrives

Update 4/6/25 - I replaced the daugtherboard and the trackpad cable. Neither worked. Device is still bricked

@grant8248 - What do you mean by Bricked? That implies nothing is working! No display or any response when trying to turn on.

The trackpad cable is a dual use! It connects to both the trackpad as well as the keyboard. Make sure the connection is not damaged on the logic board.

In this series there is also a mid board just above the trackpad which you can see in Steps 8~10 in this guide MacBook Air 13" Early 2020 Trackpad Replacement see if there is any staining or corrosion on it as oftentimes that is the problem. You should review the connections as well making sure the ribbon was fully and squarely inserted before the clamp latch was engaged.

I looked, thanks for the suggestion @danj! Everything looks good and there are no signs of corrosion on the board and nothing appears to be obviously blown up or shorted. Perhaps the daughterboard connecting the trackpad and keyboard is faulty?

@grant8248 - Yes, that can happen too!
