Is the motherboard ruined?

Although the discoloration you see does indicate overheating and isn't a good sign, you can't necessarily assume the motherboard is bad due to it.

What does the phone do when it's initially powered on? Does it come up blue immediately or is there ever any kind of picture present? Can you see it when you plug it into a computer - does it show up as a USB device at all?
