Proximity sensor not working after performing battery replacement.

Hello, so I've just performed a battery replacement using the ifixit battery replacement kit and tutorial, and while that works all well and good, I've noticed the proximity sensor has stopped working. It now seems to be permanently detecting that something is in front of it even though nothing is, which results in lift to wake not working and the screen going black during phone calls.

I've definitely narrowed it down to being a hardware issue as it still happens during safe mode, though nothing happens when applying pressure to the sensor or around it.

I'm not sure if I should re-open the phone, since I don't have an extra set of adhesive to re-close it, and I don't even know what I'd do once it was open. So does anyone have any suggestions?

The proximity sensor is in the center at the top of the mainboard, so that would be the place to check:

There is a rubber piece that goes over it and has a hole for the sensor. It's possible that the rubber piece got misaligned or something else is in front of the sensor. I would definitely wait until you have replacement screen adhesive before you check. Since it's on the mainboard, if nothing is obviously wrong then your only option might be to just get a new mainboard unfortunately.

Oooooh yeah I remember that a tiny rubber piece fell out when opening the phone up and I didn't know what it was. I think I threw it away sadly, but I'm guessing that must have been what broke everything. Thanks so much, do you know if I can get a replacement one then?

I've never seen it for sale separately unfortunately so I'm not sure what your best option is besides opening it up again to make sure the sensor looks OK or finding a cheap for parts donor to steal just the rubber piece. And that's assuming that the rubber piece will fix it and the sensor itself didn't become broken along the way so there's no guarantee.
