Repair guides, support, and troubleshooting information for MacBook Air models with 11-inch displays.

Screen suddenly going all different colors

MBA 11" A1369 from 2010 Boots fine, everything OK for some minutes or hours and then suddenly the whole screen will change colors to display only blue, then red, green, yellow..... This old guy has a few issues anyway such as "Stage Lights" and "Screen Vinegar" so I guess it's either a new screen replacement which costs more than the unit itself or to be a donor unit..... Curious on what is causing the 'new' issue.

This series used a GeForce 320M combo chip with the needed I/O North Bridge logic. Sadly, the chip didn’t hold up well.

It has been OK all day so far..... but it's life is nearing the end anyway....

This MaCat lasted 14 years.... well past the average cats 9 lives....

@danj Is this a result from the dosdude Catalina patcher? Would it be fine using High Sierra? Or, is the GeForce losing it's force regardless?

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@livfe - Using a shim service like DOSDude or OpenCore is not wise for testing. You should always use the highest supported macOS the system supports as the gold standard. Most people have moved to OpenCore as the better. You’ll need to contact DOSDude to see if any issues have been noted running on this series. I use OpenCore on my systems but they are newer so I can’t answer if DOSDude or OpenCore will be an issue here.

So… running off of High Sierra are you seeing the issue? If you are then it’s clear it’s hardware. Otherwise see what OpenCore does if it’s any better.

@danj I am not really to fussed on this unit and running High Sierra is so out of date it is almost pointless to go back to that.... was just curious on it, I actually never tried open core as yet as I mainly focus on systems that can run Big Sur or Monterey out the box..... There are so many little issues with this 2010 I could buy 3 or 4 of them with the cost of fixing one.....

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@livfe - As I prefaced the need for testing requires using the last version of macOS the system supported.

Beyond testing to run and be useful yes! You’ll need to use a shim service. But it maybe the solution you are using is the issue! Hence the need to contact DOSDude to see if he knows. Otherwise jump to OpenCore to see if that’s better! Which is where I left you.
