Parts like this do wear out or break down, so your first line of attack should be to just go ahead and replace it.

Anyway, the part looks like it's fairly cheap; I was seeing prices around $10 USD and replacement should consist of just unscrewing the old one and screwing the new one in (the use of teflon tape is probably a good idea).
