Fridge and freezer displaying wrong temp, not cooling

Samsung RF32CG5300SRAA 31.5 Cu. Ft. Mega Capacity Smart French Door Refrigerator

Both the freezer and fridge are going way out of temperature. When unplugged and immediately plugged back in, the control panel inside of the fridge will display the accurate ambient temperatures and both the fridge and freezer will proceed to attempt to cool to their set temperatures.

The control panel then seems to get "stuck" on those temps after a few hours and stops displaying temperature accurately / never fluctuates from the set temperature. The control panel will display the set temps at 34°F and -4°F, whilst a separate thermometer inside reads the fridge as being between 40-45°F and the freezer at 35-40°F.

Coils in the back are clean, compressor fan seems to kick on, and the evaporator fans are not frozen. Didn't see any error codes on the control panel and no blinking lights on the PCB. Seems unlikely that both temperature sensors would be faulty, right? Especially since the panel displays the correct temperature when the fridge is unplugged and plugged back in. What else should I be checking?

Hi @samsuckowner

Here's the service manual that may help.

I realize that you said that there were no error codes being displayed, but try performing the Self-diagnostic function during normal operation for your model as shown on p.91 of the manual and check if it shows any codes.

The error codes, their meaning and test method are shown on p.97-p.102

Note: I changed the device you selected from a Refrigerator to a Samsung refrigerator as it keeps the makes together in their same category. This makes it easier for others to find information regarding Samsung refrigerators rather than searching through a "general" refrigerator category.

HI @jayeff,

Thanks for the quick response! I tried the self-diagnostic function by holding the Fridge key + Autofill Pitcher key for 10 seconds until the display went blank. Alas, it didn't display any error codes when it came back on.

Edit: The images on the service manual are blurry, not sure if that's just me.

@samsuckowner

The images are blurry even when looking at the website where I found it.

At least the print is legible.

After startup, when the temps stop being displayed accurately is the compressor motor still running?

If not, it seems like it's going into an auto defrost cycle and then not reverting back to normal after the set time period for the defrost cycle.

Removing/replacing the power to the refrigerator is like resetting the control board.

What is the time interval between restarting the refrigerator and the problem occurring?

Do you get any errors when performing the CHECK THE INSTALLATION STATUS for your model as per p.105?

I believe the compressor is still running, I can see the fan kicking on and off intermittently and it feels like the compressor is buzzing and hot/warm to the touch. The problem is occurring the entire time, it never gets down to set temperatures. The fridge stays in the 40s (F) and the freezer in the 30s(F)

I don't see any error codes

Thanks for your time by the way

@samsuckowner

Just verifying that the evaporator fan "inside the freezer compartment" is operating? Not sure if you meant this one or the condenser fan which is near the compressor. I know it's blurry but see p.73 how to access it.

@jayeff

The condenser fan next to the compressor seems to be kicking on and off intermittently. Both evaporator fans (fridge and freezer) seem to work.

I have the same exact problem with my Samsung fridge. Plug unit in and about 5 / 10 minutes the compressor will start up. Coil fan running and compressor sounds normal. No error codes displayed. System will cool/freeze down to set temperatures but at a certain point when using the front display to view actual temperatures it will show the programmed temperatures. I can hear the compressor still running but at some point it will shut off and not start back up. I believe the reason it will not start back up is that the main control board is reading the programmed temperature and therefor thinks system is still cold. After unplugging and waiting for 2 minutes and plugging back, pressing the temp button to view temps will now show the actual temps which are much higher then just two minutes prior before unplugging and resetting. Compressor will then start back up in about 5 / 10 minutes now that it sees the actual temperatures. I have ordered a used Main Control board in hopes this fixes the problem.
