Does 2nd rinse when single rinse selected

Kenmore 110 20912991, 90 series, top load washer. With switch set to one rinse, the washer started doing second rinse. Does this suggest bad timer, or bad rinse selector switch. I sprayed contact cleaner on switches.... did not help. Other than this, washer works well and is not a rust bucket. It had a new transmission about 2 or 3 years ago. Am not in a position to afford a new washer now. Any ideas would be helpful, please.

Try the following to either prove or eliminate that the rinse selector switch is the problem

Disconnect the power to the washer, open the control panel and disconnect the wiring harness from the rinse selector switch and use an Ohmmeter to check if the rinse selector switch is working correctly.

The switch has two sets of make contacts. One of which operates depending on whether one rinse or two rinses are selected.

Not totally sure but looking at an image of the switch with the switch in one position there should be a short circuit i.e. 0.00 Ohms shown on the Ohmmeter, between either 3&5 or 1&4 pins on the switch. If one is short circuit the other should be open circuit i.e. infinite Ohms or OL on meter

Example: 3&5 = 0.00 Ohms then 1&4 = OL. Changing the switch position should result in 3&5 = OL and 1&4 = 0.00 ohms.

If both sets are 0.00 Ohms then the switch is faulty and will need to be replaced. Search online for either the original part number Whirlpool 661613 or WPW10168257 which has superseded it, to find suppliers that suit you best.

Tested the 1 and 2 rinse switch. Got 3 -5 no beep with 1 - 4 beep, flipped switch got 3 - 5 beep with 1 - 4 no beep. Suggests switch is functioning as it should, I assume?

The washer still goes to second rinse, even with one rinse selected.

I also blew on the air tube in case it had debris in it. And sprayed switch with contact cleaner...no luck

Sounds about right. Wonder what happens if you disconnect the switch entirely and then run a cycle i.e. one rinse cycle, 2 rinse cycles or no rinse at all

I can't find a wiring diagram for the washer (Whirlpool part # LIT3953819) so you may have to check where the wires go to from the switch. I'm guessing that they go to the cycle timer as it control everything.

Hi. I got it fixed. I replaced the timer.

The one I took out said Invesys. FSP. 3953248.

The new timer was Robert Shaw. FSP. 3953248.

I assume various companies made these timers for Whirlpool, even though a Kenmore Sears washer?

As it has the same Whirlpool part number i.e. 3953248, it will be the same.

To my knowledge Kenmore doesn't actually make any appliances

If going what is shown by this supplier and this supplier when searching for parts for various Kenmore appliances i.e. washers, refrigerators, dryers, stoves etc, then depending on the actual model they could be made entirely using parts made by either Whirlpool, LG, Samsung or Frigidaire/Electrolux.

To me it seems that basically they're either made to order on behalf of Kenmore by these companies or they're just rebadged versions of their own models.
