The PlayStation 3 (or commonly known as the PS3) is the third home computer entertainment system produced by Sony Computer Entertainment, and the successor to the PlayStation 2. It was released November 11, 2006

Is my PS3 bricked? Permanent black screen...

So here's the story: I wanted to go back to wrap up an old game on my PS3. Turned it on and everything worked fine. As I hadn't turned it on in years, it obviously had an update. I go to update the system and mid update the screen goes black. I wait about 30-45 minutes and gave up and shut off the system. When I turned the system back on - nothing - just a black screen. Hold the power button down to reset video settings - nothing. Hold the button to go to safe mode - nothing. Switch from HDMI to AV out - nothing.

I figured something must've gotten corrupted with the hard drive. So today I received a new hard drive and switched it out. I got a good dose of hopeium, the system gave me video and I installed the OS onto the new hard drive. As soon as the OS was done installing, it went straight back to the black screen and I'm back to the same issue.

I contacted PS support and the person who answered told me it was an issue with the HDMI retimer, which doesn't make any sense to me because I had perfectly good video before the update and after putting in the new hard drive.

Please! Any help would be really greatly appreciated. I'm very stumped.

Hi!

Hopefully I can help you further! You mentioned that also the AV cable failed to show you any image, right?

It’s possible that the firmware update failed. This does not mean that the actual OS installation failed but failed on the “BIOS/Firmware” side. This could be caused by a harddisk which failed..

If this is the case, it is bricked and it’s motherboard related. Repairing this is very difficult, do you have any experience with soldering? Replacing the motherboard is possible but expensive.

But, before we jump to this, what does work at the moment? Are you able to access safe mode successfully? Till how far can you go before you get a black screen?

Prior to the update that broke everything, image showed up perfectly fine. Post update I had no image. Once I put in a new hard drive, I had image to install the OS and as soon as that hit 100%, it was back to no image for both HDMI and AV video out.

I don't have experience with soldering unfortunately and don't feel like it's worth putting in the money for repair :(

Safe mode does not work unfortunately. It's immediate black screen on start up. No menu, nothing.

Hmm, and when you take the harddisk out and try to boot it? Does it show any image now? It really does sound like that it’s bricked firmare related… I doubt it’s the HDMI chip, as AV doesn’t show anything as well and it happened right after the failed update..
