Repair guides for both film and digital cameras of the now-discontinued Minolta line.

Minolta Freedom Zoom 140EX Panorama Date not turning on

Hi,

I recently picked up a Minolta camera from an op shop, and put new batteries in (definitely the correct ones, model from the official manual(CR123A)), and it turned on and worked well, but I didn’t use it for about 3 weeks, and then it stopped turning on. When I press the power button, the display turns on for 1 second and then turns off again, although the date display is on. The lens is not opening, even though it is moving forward a tiny bit. The batteries are in the correct orientation, because they only fit one way.

Hi @voydurwarranty

Try testing both of the batteries' voltage with a meter or try a new battery just to eliminate the possibility that one of the first battery( or batteries) has failed for some reason

Thanks, but I do not have a voltmeter/multimeter on hand. Is there any other way?

@voydurwarranty

Without a meter (do you know anyone who has one that they could lend to you?) you don't know the state of the batteries now i.e. good or depleted for whatever reason so the only other option is to try new batteries.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

If the voltage is okay, what should I do?

You could try a power refresh in case the software (if there is any in the camera) has become corrupted.

Remove the batteries from the camera and then press and hold the on/off and shutter release buttons for about 15 seconds and then release them.

Reinsert the batteries and check.

If it is a data problem then doing this should reset the camera back to normal.

If it still doesn't work then it may be an electrical problem and the camera will have to be opened to find out what's wrong. Perhaps check that the camera's battery terminals are clean and bright and not corroded etc.

Unfortunately I cannot find a service manual for the camera. You may have better luck

I cleaned the battery terminals and tried the power refresh, but it still doesn’t work. If I take it apart, would should I be looking for?

Assuming you tested the batteries with a meter (or inserted new ones) you didn't say, then once the camera is open check for loose connections or dry solder joints between the battery terminals and where they connect to the board.

If it all looks OK then check for any loose flex cable connections between the major components.

Check the mainboard for any obvious visible problems.

If there's nothing obvious then without a schematic or service manual (I can't find one) it will be very difficult to find out what's wrong

I have a manual, but it doesn’t have a schematic or any instructions on servicing: https://www.manualslib.com/manual/769296... .

@voydurwarranty

That is the user manual. They're not meant to be used for repairs. You need a service manual for that.

If the problem requires a part replacement then as Minolta is no longer in business, getting parts from them is no longer an option.

The only option then may be to get another same model "non working" camera and use it as a donor and hope that the part you need from it is still OK.
