Repair guides and disassembly information for the new base-model 14-inch MacBook Pro, released November 2023, refreshed with the Apple-designed M3 SoC. Successor to the 13-inch Touch Bar MacBook Pro with M2.

Beeping once every 7-8 seconds during heavy use

New Apple M3 Pro Nov 2023 beeps every 7-8 once it begins to work harder/heats up(?). I believe the fan also does not start spinning. Beeping comes straight out of the board, not a speaker beep and continues even when sound is off. The beeping is not during startup, and the mac works as normal with the exception of the beeping.

I think that a small amount of liquid was spilled on the left side of the keyboard prior to this issue appearing. I have "There may be an issue with the fan: PPF003,PPF004,PPF001" from diagnostics.

Is this beep during startup? Does your machine boot into MacOS at all?

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@jmehnert

No, this is a completely separate issue to the "3 beeps on startup" that I see everywhere online. The beeping doesn't occur on startup. Mac works completely normally except for the incessant beeping every 7-8 seconds once the temp begins to heat up. Otherwise can use the computer as normal.

@computer100 - I hope I selected your model 14”

Can you run the onboard diagnostics? Press the D Startup key while cools and then again when it starts beeping see if there is a new error and if you see any error when cooled let us know what you got.

Reference: Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac

Okay I've done the diagnostics. The results were the same hot and cold, beeping during both (even when I stuck the macbook in the fridge for a few minutes until it got quite cold)

With the power cable attached, I get "There may be an issue with the fan: PPF003, PPF004, PPF001".

Without the power cable attached, I get "There may be an issue with the fan: PPF003, PPF004, PPF001" AND "There may be an issue with the Power Port: PPF020".

I'm not sure if it's just because you are expected to have the power cable attached during diagnostics? Hopefully this provides some insight. I think ultimately I am going to have to find a repair shop because this feels to me like a board repair issue.

@computer100 - Yes! This sounds like a much deeper issue! Review your warranty status as well as what your countries laws dictate. Hopefully it’s covered.

Had it all before, Check the SMC and the supply lines going to it for some faulty components.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@livfe - Hopefully he can get it fixed under warranty! This is a newer M3 series system. The SMC logic is very different in the M Series.

@danj Unfortunately I think I did spill some liquid on the laptop prior to this issue occurring. Whether or not it is the cause I think it would void my warranty. Any idea the best way to approach this? I'll probably take it in to apple anyways and see what they say but I don't have my hopes up. Alternatively I am hoping some 3rd party repair could fix the board for ~300$. Any advice appreciated.

I found This Topic, This Topic and This Topic that maybe is what is causing the issue.

The possibility I’m thinking is a weak battery and/or the charger is not correct and/or the cord is not the needed USB-C cable or bad MagSafe cord. Diagnostics will give us a clue.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@danj Yes running diagnostics indeed may provide more insight.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

For the first link, where he was using the wrong charger cable, I do not think that this is not the issue because I am using the stock charging cable I received when I purchased the macbook. However, his description of the error down to the error messages is accurate to my issue.

I think the other two links are not relevant for my particular issue after reading up on them. Thank you for the suggestions though.
