Smaller, thinner, quieter model of the Playstation 2 (SCPH-700xx) released by Sony in September, 2004.

Loud buzzing only when the top shell is on

The disc reads and boots fine when the top shell is off and I'm manually pressing the eject detection button things but when I put the top shell on, it makes a loud buzzing and doesn't read. I think the buzzing is the laser linear motor not stopping and I have no clue why. I imagine I need a new shell, just seeing if there's anything else I can do. Thanks!

Figured it out, I 3d printed out some parts to push the DVD laser ribbon cable down so it wouldn't scratch the disc and a screw holding down one of the parts was lifted enough to be touching the top shell so when the laser assembly moved, the screw was scratching the top shell causing the noise. To fix it I'm just cutting a bit of the shell off as the screw is close to the main cutout for the laser.

If you're having a similar issue, put the top shell on with no screws and see if the laser is hard to move back and fourth especially when adding pressure to the top. Also look at the underside of the shell for any scratch marks.

I will say please DO NOT CUT YOUR SHELL if you have other options, you might make your problem worse and scratch the disc badly. Proceed with caution if you do this.

Hi Jek!

Is it possible for you to make a video for us?

It's also possible that the disc is actually grinding to the shell (when it's spinning).

Are you sure that the top cover is 100% seated correctly and all the screws are in (just to be sure)?

Otherwise you can check for a new top cover and see if that solves it.

As it does work with the top cover off, the components should be OK.

Since when is this happening? Just out of nowhere? Or did you do a repair before it happened?

Please let us know!
