Series X shuts off during games. Occasionally when turned on.
My series x has had an issue with shutting off during games. Mainly with Series X/S games. Occasionally when I turn the system on it'll shut off at the Xbox screen (3-4 seconds).
I thought perhaps the power supply was failing. In games it would last maybe 30 mins to an hour before shutting off. Sometimes you might be able to an hour or more.
I bought a replacement power supply from ifixit this past Wednesday and arrived this morning. Replacement successful. Upon testing, it went 2 straight hours in a game that usually shut off within 30 mins to an hour. It shutoff. So I fired the same game back up and went a little more then 2 hours.
I switched to a different game that also gave me issues before. It went around 5-7 mins then shut off. Tried again, went 30 mins then shut off. Tried again. This time went nearly 2 hours before I shut everything down and called it a night.
Sorry for the long post but wanted to give as much detail as I could. I've tried all the traditional troubleshooting before buying the replacement. So either the power supply I just bought has an issue? But since it's near identical to before I'm could be something else going on.
Was hoping someone might have other possible hardware related troubleshooting. Any feedback is much appreciated.

Yeah man I've since replaced mine with the all digital series x. I never did find out what the issue was. My guess is the chip got damaged at some point because when I took it apart last fall the thermal paste was darn near all gone. 3/4 of the chip was exposed with burnt up paste in spots. Guessing the chip got damaged. Might explain why older games worked fine but anything new was a toss up. 15 mins to close to an hour before it would shut off on certain games.
Liking the all digital series x so far after 3 months. The new systems have heat pipes with the heat sink. And I have a tiny 10 dollar fan that blows air at it. It rarely feels "hot" even after hours of heavy gaming. And they got rid of the annoying tin lid over the x clamp on the motherboards.
Still wish I knew what was wrong with the first series x for sure. But it was killing my interest in gaming because anything I wanted to play I couldn't lol or deal with the shut offs. Save spamming to avoid losing too much progress.

If by chance you ever get it diagnosed please share because I've been dying to get a hint why the first series x was doing this little over a year after I got it. My guess is the thermal paste since mine was toast. That chip might have been hurt/damaged.

I have the same issues. I applied new thermal paste and pads, even replaced PSU ,still shutting down after 20-25 mins when playing COD BO6.

Then you might want to check the motherboard and run some tests!
