Software issues after display replacement...

I'm experiencing several software problems since I replaced my Pixel 7 Pro display. Raise to wake no longer works, but also neither does tap to wake. Additionally, When I make a call, the screen immediately goes dark and I have to wake the screen again with the power button, because tap to wake doesn't work there either. It's also now difficult to dismiss notifications from the lock screen. They just bounce back into place after swiping. And maybe a few other problems. Any ideas about what could be wrong? I don't want to attempt a software reset, really. I don't want to lose my data.

Thanks.

I had the exact same issues after a screen repair. It turns out, there is blue protective tape on the back of the replacement screen, as well as a little plastic protector on the hole punch for the front camera, that needs to be removed. If not removed, the light and proximity sensors are blocked, so from what I can tell the phone thinks it's in your pocket or something. Therefore the always on display turns off, you can't tap to wake or easily dismiss notifications because it's trying not to register touches, and the screen goes black during calls. The protector on the camera hole also obviously means the camera won't work. Note when troubleshooting, I had the screen connected but laid loose over the phone, and that was also enough to block the sensors and maintain the same issues. I had to remove the tape, snap the screen in so it sit right, then everything worked.

In retrospect, I should have recognized this as protective tape that needed to be removed, or tested all functions before fully re-assembling, but this was my first screen repair so I didn't want to remove anything that wasn't in the instructions. I'd recommend a quick note about this in the instructions.

It sounds like the display replacement might have affected some of the hardware components or their connections, which could be causing these issues. Here’s a detailed checklist to help diagnose and potentially resolve the problems:

1. Check Display and Connector Installation

  • Verify Connections: Make sure the display connectors are firmly and correctly connected to the motherboard. Loose or improperly connected cables can lead to malfunctioning features.
  • Inspect for Damage: Look for any visible damage to the connectors or cables that might have occurred during the repair.

2. Check Sensor Functionality

  • Proximity Sensor: The screen going dark during calls could indicate a problem with the proximity sensor. Ensure that the sensor’s area was not obstructed or damaged during the replacement.
  • Ambient Light Sensor: Similarly, make sure the ambient light sensor (which controls the brightness) is functioning properly and wasn’t damaged or obstructed.

3. Verify Display Compatibility

  • Check Compatibility: Ensure the replacement display is compatible with your Pixel 7 Pro model. Incompatible displays might not work correctly with the phone’s software and sensors.

4. Software and Firmware Checks

  • Check for Updates: Sometimes, software issues can be resolved by updating your phone’s firmware. Go to Settings > System > Advanced > System update to check for any available updates.
  • Safe Mode: Boot your phone into safe mode to see if the issues persist. This can help determine if a third-party app is causing the problems. To enter safe mode, press and hold the Power button, then long press Power off until you see the option to restart in safe mode.

5. Calibrate the Sensors

  • Some phones have built-in calibration options for sensors. Check your phone’s settings or use a third-party app to recalibrate the proximity and ambient light sensors.

6. Check App Permissions

  • Permissions: Make sure the phone's system apps have the necessary permissions to use the display and sensor features. Go to Settings > Apps & notifications and review permissions.

7. Perform a Soft Reset

  • Restart: Sometimes, a simple restart can fix glitches. Press and hold the Power button and select Restart.

8. Seek Professional Help

  • Repair Shop: If the above steps don’t resolve the issues, it may be worth taking your phone back to the repair shop or seeking professional help. They can recheck the installation and components to ensure everything is functioning correctly.

Backup Your Data

  • Backup: While you prefer not to do a factory reset, ensure your data is backed up. Use Google’s backup services or other cloud storage options to save your data just in case.

If you need further guidance or specific instructions for any of these steps, let me know!

While ChatGPT or whatever AI engine you used has come up with somewhat reasonable troubleshooting steps, the answer here is much simpler than your answer makes it out to be. I'm pretty sure @adamt96431 has the right idea, as the exact same thing happened to him and he figured out the problem and fixed it - without AI.
