Repair and disassembly information for Samsung's flagship S20+ Android smartphone, released in March of 2020.

S20+ with new ifixit battery not charging/not turning on

I bought a replacement battery from ifixit, a week ago, for my old samsung s20+. After carefully installing it, phone doesnt turn on at all and while charging phone only pulls about 1.7 watts.

So i tried the original battery to confirm the phone was working. and phone boots up without any issues and while charging it pulls 18-20watts easily.

I contacted ifixit support and they arranged another replacement battery but this battery also does the same thing. Not charging and phone doesnt turns on. Phone still works with the original battery.

So are there any hidden steps that i got to do during battery replacement process or do i just have bad luck and got 2 dead batteries?

@anas31761 there shoildn't be. What numbers are on yuor original battery, what numbers are on the iFixit battery. What is the exact SM- #### on your phone:

SM-G986B, SM-G986F, SM-G986U, SM-G986U1, SM-G986W, SM-G9860, SM-G986N?

@oldturkey03

Phone model: SM-G986B/DS

Original battery model: EB-BG985ABY

iFixit battery model: EB-BG985ABY

iFixit part number: IF437-003-1

One thing i noticed is that both ifixit batteries are a little bit smaller in size physically than the original one.

That battery being a bit bigger can be caused by your other older battery expanding over time. With your main issue, have you tried different cables and making sure the charging plug is clear and not shorted out in any ways?

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@infiniti_dev yeah i did try different cables. original battery works with all of the cables but ifixit batteries doesnt work properly. i mean both of them takes about 1.8w while plugged in when the original battery takes 18-20w.

Charging plug is clear ofcourse otherwise original battery would also not work

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

Yea, my best guess is you have a faulty battery, or there is a issue with your battery controller wich I doubt as your original battery works

@anas31761 yeah, I've noticed the same thing with the ribbon cable and the descriptor. Use your multimeter and check the voltage and polarity on both connectors. See if those are the same. If they are, then I am okay with assuming the battery is compatible. If not, you have an explanation why both batteries did not work. I'd contact iFixit support@ifixit.com and see what they can come up with.

So I just tested the batteries with multimeter and the polarities on the iFixit battery connecter terminals are opposite from the Original Samsung battery. i.e. Between terminal points where Samsung battery shows +3.7v, ifixit battery shows -3.7v. I tested between multiple terminals and iFixit batteries are always opposite than original Samsung one.

I will definitely ask iFixit support about this and return both of the batteries but Im just confused as to how can this happen to multiple batteries?

Edit: added a picture of polaritites in the question, maybe it can help

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@anas31761 you know they’ll make it right. As for what happened, I am sure they will check on that internally as well. Keep us informed

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@oldturkey03 I contacted them yesterday and today they issued a refund and also said to not return the batteries. They further said that they will forward the issue to the team so they can look whats going on.

So now I still have batteries. Ofcourse they dont work, but I'm thinking of experimenting with them. Do you think desoldering and soldering the battery board on the opposite battery terminals can help?

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@anas31761 I am careful with suggesting this. If anything I would see if I could replace not the flex but the whole battery control board

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@oldturkey03 Just a small update. I removed the battery board from battery today and soldered it on opposite polaritites. The voltage polarities on the ribbon cable connector became exactly the same as on original samsung battery. BUT upon installing in the phone, it still doesnt work. When charging it constantly disconnects and reconnects.

So at the moment I have just installed original battery and closed the back. The phone is working without any issues.
