Repair and disassembly information for the 2020 refresh of the MacBook Air model A2179 with an Intel processor that was released in March 2020.

MacBook Air 2020 doesn't see battery / does not charge

Hi all!

So I've got a Macbook Air 2020 Retina Intel version that only boots whenever the power is connected (USB-C 30W original charger), (it is very slow and throttled then though, but that's probably because of lack of power).
I thought it was because it hadn't been used for 6+ months and the battery would be dead. So I went ahead and changed the battery with the one iFixit offers along with the guide they provide: MacBook Air 13" Early 2020 Battery Replacement

Everything was done quite easily. But the result is, unfortunately, still the same: it doesn't run on battery and also does not charge the battery. It doesn't show a battery icon in the top bar either (while the appropriate box for it is checked in the menu).

I've installed Coconutbattery and this is the result:

Does anyone know what else I can do? I've rechecked the battery cable a few times, but it really is connected properly.
I've done a SMC reset by following this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aM0TAJDm...

Not sure what else I can do. Would love to hear anyone's thoughts :-).

Update 13:55:
The battery cable wasn't plugged in far enough apparently! So it runs, YAY!

I've added pics of how it was connected and after I pressed a little harder, feeling a 'tick' as well.

New coconutBattery stats attached as well. Seems very old? Let's see how it will perform :-).

The NaN error is telling us the onboard BMC logic is not communicating to the systems SMC logic.

Make sure the cable from the battery is not damaged and the connection interface is fully mated and the pins are not damaged.

If that fails to fix things then you’ll need to take the logic board out and inspect it for liquid damage on the other side as often a spill into the keyboard will leak onto the logic board. Post a few pictures that are sharp and well lit so we can help you find the damaged area and then figure out how to proceed. Use a soft paint birch to dust the board down and use a can of caned air to blow the debris away before taking the pictures if it’s really dusty.

Thanks for our answer! I'll check and report back here.

@roel95004 - If the inspection and reseating of the cable didn’t help you will need to inspect the logic board of liquid or other damage like a discolored component when you compare to the iFixit images. Post some clear images here that are like what we have in the guides so we can see as well. Can’t tell you anything more until we see something.

Hi Dan, the cable wasn't fully 'mated' it appears! I've added pics to the first post showing the difference. So it works now: YAY! Thanks for having me check it for a 7th time :-).

I've added a pic of coconutBattery: how does that look to you?

@roel95004 - I still see NaN, that’s not right. Reset SMC and then look again you should see values where NaN values are.

@danj My bad, I've added the wrong screenshot I guess. Should be there now.
