WiFi and Bluetooth antenna, will this still work?

I had to replace the back glass of my phone, which required me to tear down the phone. I accidentally ripped the ribbon of the WiFi and Bluetooth antenna near the top of the case where it is held by a screw. What are the chances that it’ll still work when I put it back in? Or should I just replace that part?

Hi Melissa,

I'd suggest replacing the part, as it's my understanding that some of the radio signal functions such as WiFi and BlueTooth may indeed use the case of the phone as part of the antenna, so chances are it may not work correctly without that connection.

Of course, you can always try it out; just reassemble the phone completely but leave out the step where you replace the display adhesive. Then you can see how everything works; if it's fine you just have to pop the screen back off and seal it down with the precut adhesive sheet, but otherwise you will be able to use the phone as is until you've had a chance to order a replacement part and get it installed.

Unfortunately the iPhone XS doesn't have quite as complete a set of guides as does the iPhone X, but I did locate a site in Spain that has one for replacing the WiFi antenna that covers the part you are having trouble with.

As far as getting the part, fortunately you can pick one up right here on iFixit.

@melissadean You are most welcome; that's what this site is all about! Don't forget a sheet of precut adhesive to glue the screen back on when you're done. Once I've finished a repair, I like to warm the edges of the screen with a hair dryer for about 3 minutes then place the phone face down and put some weight on it to help soften the adhesive and seal it tight to give the best shot at getting it as waterproof as possible.

Anyway, come on back when you're all done and let us know how it went for you; your experience may well help someone else who has the same problem.
