Nintendo's first 3DS handheld device released February 2011, identified by model number CTR-001.

3ds won’t turn on, battery’s good

I recently took my 3DS out of storage, after it hadn’t worked for a couple of years. It turned on, so then I went and tried putting in a few SD cards I had lying around. After about 5-10 minutes of this, it started to only work if you took the battery out for a few seconds, and then an hour or so later, it wouldn’t turn on at all. I’ve put the battery in a 2DS I have and it turned on so I know the battery’s good but other than that I’m at a lose of what to do.

Also the circle pad was replaced about 6 months back and the right shoulder button hasn’t worked in years (just including incase it helps). I would also ideally like to keep all the data on the system if possible, this was my childhood 3DS so I don’t really wanna lose my system saves and Eshop purchases.

Hi!

So when you try to turn it on, is the 3DS telling you something? Are all the LED's off? Or is it turning blue without getting anything on the screen? Did you tried to boot the 3DS without any SD card? Did you tried the 2DS it's battery on the 3DS?

@dan0 it’s not displaying anything, just blank. the charging light comes on but the blue light does not, yes I have tried without an SD card and same result, I also tried the 2DS battery but also the same result.

It sounds like a failed component on the logic from the description charging ic chip, capacitor or something . Might have to send it off to someone who specialises in board repair.

Try charging a battery in the 3ds then check it on the 2ds to see if it raised the battery level.

I’m still thinking something has shorted out on the board maybe not the charging ic but something. The way it was sporadically working is indicative of a failing component.

Hi!

Alright, did you do the power reset? Take the battery out. Press the power button to turn it on without battery in it, then place the battery in, charge for 1 minute and try to turn it on again.

If this doesn't work, check the battery pins on the motherboard. Are they still fine? Not budged or something..?

It also could be that 1 of the fuses are broken on the motherboard... You can test this with a multimeter - continuity test.

I have tried the battery reset and nothing, the Battery pins seem nice and springy with no visible corrosion either.

Where around on the board should I go poking around?

@dan0 I’ll try that in the morning and tell you what I find out.
