There can be a lot of reasons for poor fuel economy in a vehicle.

Start by getting the vehicle's OBDII port scanned with an appropriate scantool to see if any DTC codes (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) have been logged. These codes (if any) will tell you what's wrong with the engine and transmission.
