Why are plugged in headphones ignored?
New phone and headphone jack not acknowledging input of working headphones. What software conflicts could be the cause, if any?

Third device I tried worked. Two previous working earphone devices got NO Response from phone. Third successful device was a headphone set with an almost identical jack connector as the two previously tried, except there were two rings instead of three rings. My first time ever experiencing this type of jack issue.
My advice to those similarly situated is to try several different types of earphone/headphone devices before seeking more expensive or time consuming solutions.

Hi @james17667,
A two ring audio plug connector is only mono audio and not stereo so I'm guessing that the earphone jack in the phone is faulty.
With most mobile phones you should be able to use headphones with the microphone feature i.e. 4 ring plug connector, so perhaps you could try that at least to get stereo audio.
2 ring (TS) mono audio plugs are Tip - left and right audio, Sleeve - common or earth return.
3 ring (TRS) stereo audio plugs are Tip - left audio, Ring - right audio, Sleeve - common or earth return.
4 ring (TRRS) stereo audio + mic plugs are Tip - left audio, Ring 1 - right audio, Ring 2 - mic , Sleeve - common or earth return.
Agreed. My issue wasn't eliminated, however it become substantially better. The issue went from not working at all, to working with certain headphones. Now the question is whether the "different ring number" is the problem, and, if so, where is the fault. Could be a faulty "jack', or still could be software conflicts. I bought an inexpensive "bluetooth earphone set" so I will table this issue for a few days... Appreciate your assistance.
You would think if it were software conflicts that even a 2 ring plug would have problems.
If none are evident when using the 2 ring plug and if you aren't getting any indications that the headphones are connected when a 3 or 4 ring plug is inserted i.e. headphone icon on screen on or not, then more likely it is a faulty headphone jack. There's a contact inside the jack that is operated/released by the plug being inserted/removed and this signals the audio controller as to what to do i.e. switch audio from internal speaker to headphones or not.
@jayeff I understand that point, and that could be the case. However, I am guessing that Dolby Atmos has interfered with the (mic feature of the TRRS) that causes the signal to be ignored by the audio controller. The TRS connector with (no mic feature) does not have the same conflict, thus they work. So there is a problem with either: 1) faulty jack connector; 2) Dolby override functions related to: "Dolby can't be turned off when internal loudspeaker is on", and internal loudspeaker only turned off with working headphones inserted or bluethooth on; or 3) very low quality TRRS earphones used (someone suggested). Have not tried TS plugs yet. Still think more likely faulty jack.
Hi @james17667,
Have you tried a different set of known working headphones in the phone, to prove that the phone's headphone jack is OK? Sometimes minute differences in the sizing of the headphones' plug connector can mean that it doesn't operate the contact inside the headphone socket. Try gently moving the headphone plug in and out and a bit side to side to check if the phone now detects it. Be gentle when doing this
What do you mean by "new ..... headphone jack"? Is this because it is a new phone or is it already a replacement headphone jack in the new phone?
What is the make and model number of the phone?

I have tried all the preliminary things suggested. Looking for known software conflicts within Moto G Play (2023) and Android 13 sound system. I'm thinking Dolby Atmos may not be fully functioning, however I get the same problem with Dolby disabled. Trying to rule out software incompatibility issues before I closely look at the headphone jack unit.
Try safe mode and see if they work.
At least trying this will eliminate any 3rd party apps from the equation
@jayeff Tried safemode, same result. Interestingly, Dolby is a 3rd party pre-installed app, so it can't be uninstalled, yet there is no update for it. I'm missing something, but Dolby seems to be in the way???
Can you try stopping and disabling the Dolby app?
Don't know the location or even if the settings are there but look for Settings > Apps > select Dolby app > force stop and then disable or something similar
@jayeff It does allows for a "force stop" and a "disabling"; did that a couple of times to no avail. Interesting that the FM-Radio-App uses the earphones as an antenna for clearer reception, but no icon is produced. Thinking hardware now, so will take a look if I can avoid breaking the cameras.
There could be several reasons why your headphones are being ignored when plugged in:
1. Incorrect settings: Ensure that your device's audio settings are set to use the headphones as the output device.
2. Faulty headphone jack: The headphone jack might be damaged or malfunctioning, preventing the device from detecting the headphones.
3. Audio jack settings: Some devices have separate settings for the audio jack, make sure it's set to "headphones" or "audio out".
4. Conflicting devices: If multiple audio devices are connected, the device might be defaulting to a different output.
5. Driver issues: Outdated or corrupted audio drivers can cause issues with headphone detection.
6. Hardware problem: There might be a hardware issue with the headphones or the device's audio port.
Try these troubleshooting steps:
1. Check your device's audio settings
2. Try a different headphone jack or audio port
3. Restart your device
4. Update audio drivers
5. Try a different pair of headphones
If none of these steps work, consider seeking further assistance from the device manufacturer or a professional repair service.

My audio/sound setting only shows "Dolby Atmos" and it's operations are curious. It says things like: "Unable to turn off when loud speaker is on", even though no media is actually on. Any thoughts on how to get around Dolby Atmos in order to test further?
