The graphics services within your system is within the Intel CPU chip it’s not powerful enough to drive anything larger.
Let’s make sure we understand the screen size is not the issue it’s the resolution of the display. Think of it this way… I have a projector shining onto a wall, I can push the projector forward making the image smaller and as I do so the resolution is the same just tighter! Likewise as I pull the projector away from the wall the image starts to breakdown as there is a need for more scans (scan rate) this is where a retina or 4/5k display can offer more Image fidelity. But! The graphics engine needs to offer that, otherwise you just have a portion of the screen used with the rest blank!
