iPhone is at the minimum brightness damaged battery?

So my iphone x started doing weird things like lowering the brightness but like not systematic. After time my brightness dropped to like -300% and is only even readable when charging, i replaced the battery for new bcs i thought its damaged battery. Now i wonder what the hell... Its woobling, getting darker over time, lock and unlock screen helps for like 1second to see something... what could be the cause ? the display is kinda new, so i think itd be it... >.<

Do you have automatic brightness on? If so turn it off and see if it still does this wonky thing

This sounds like a light sensor problem you could replace it or just manually adjust the brightness

@hampter Now that you mention it, it could indeed be a problem with the ambient light sensor. Unfortunately it is part of the Face ID system so if you replace it you'll lose Face ID permanently.

You could also just turn off automatic brightness and manually adjust it but you are right if the sensor is replaced Face ID will be lost unless you bring to to your corporate overlords at apple

Hi Richard,

Weirdly, the issues you're seeing sound a lot like an issue with the backlight, but the problem with that theory is that your phone doesn't come with a backlight; on an OLED display the pixels each generate their own light so no need for a backlight.

However, you mentioned that the display is kinda new - I assume that means it's been replaced recently. By any chance did you opt for the cheaper LCD version of the screen rather than an OLED replacement?

If that's the case, I'd suggest you may need to replace the screen again. The problem I see with the cheap LCD replacements is that the OLED screens don't have any need for control signals to run the backlight, so they don't have any. The aftermarket manufacturers had to come up with some weird kind of kludge to get the backlight to work and be adjustable, so I'm suspicious that circuit has gone haywire on your phone.

Having two grandchildren with iPhone X phones, I have had to replace a lot of screens, so I'm kind of an expert on them by now, lol. If you go on AliExpress you can find OLED screens for the iPhone X for as low as $14 USD, although generally the cheapest ones are running around $20 right now. That's barely more than the cost of an LCD and is worthwhile for the power savings alone (backlights take a lot more power than OLED displays so your battery is going to run down sooner).

Try going into setting and then screen or display or brightness and turning automatic brightness off.

Also, has the brightness been decreasing over time or did it happen at once. That would either validate or disprove @dadibrokeit 's answer.

Here's one thing to try.

1) Shine a torch at the display. Check if you can see stuff in it. This will test the lcd screen theory

2) Shine a torch at the camera/faceid. Check if the brightness goes up. This will test the camera+automatic brightness theory.
