Plastic melted near circuit board in IFB washing machine

In my IFB top load washing machine (https://www.ifbappliances.com/tl-sibs-10...), some kind of plastic near the circuit board has melted and it was dripping since few days.

Yellow to Red coloured substance in the photo above is the plastic I mentioned above, it's in semi liquid form and is dripping.

IFB technician who visited to look at this said it was due to high voltage and has asked us to not use the machine till they replace the board. Is this really serious issue or the technician has wrongly diagnosed the issue? He is also pushing me to buy a voltage stabiliser from IFB for this - before they repair.

Replacement is the only option. Since my machine is under warred, they have agreed to replace the part. But it’s been 2 months. Very slow customer service. They are saying it’s taking time for the part to arrive.

It look more like a conformal coating to me. If it is plastic melting you should be able to find where it is coming from. High voltage isn't going to melt plastic unless it is arcing someplace and therefore getting hot. That will leave an obvious black spot and the plastic isn't going to cover the whole PCB like that. Personally, I think the tech has no clue or is scamming you. Ask him to show you where the plastic has melted, and why it is covering the whole PCB. Utility voltage isn't going to increase enought to melt plastic. A voltage regulator for that would be high power and expensive and I have never seen or know one to be needed.

So what is the problem with the machine that required a tech visit?

> So what is the problem with the machine that required a tech visit?

I noticed this substance dripping from the machine and hence asked for visit. Machine was working properly.

> Personally, I think the tech has no clue or is scamming you.

Yeah, I think you're right.

> It look more like a conformal coating to me

If this is melting, could heat be a problem? I have kept the machine on the top floor. And even though the machine is under a roof and doesn't get direct sunlight, the area will be mostly hot throughout the day.

If this is conformal coating melting, what can be the options to fix it?

Thanks again.

@ruggb, any idea why the conformal coating be melting? and what is the way to fix this?

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

Read this https://www.vaniman.com/ultimate-conform...

Conformal coating protects the electronics from moisture. Most HVAC equipment PCBs use it because they are usually in an uncontrolled environment.

If it is on the PCB, and deteriorating from normal heat of the machine, then it is a manufacturing defect. It isn't something that will cause an operational problem unless you are in the tropics with high moisture and your top floor has no HVAC or the washer is spraying water on it, it is just making a mess.

You can't fix a problem unless you know what is causing it. Being a parts jockey can get expensive.

1. Is it indeed conformal coating on the PCB?

2. Is there excessive heat in the machine?

3. Is there any other environmental conditions that would remove the coating? (read the above article)

If 1 = yes and 2&3 = no, then it is a mfg. problem and replacing the PCB will fix it....IF.... the cause was corrected by the mfg.

If 2 and/or 3 is yes, then that is what you need to correct.

hello

I too had this problem....I am am electronics Engineer and the Bull $@$* of High voltage story by service personnel is only an escape plan...the protective coating on the PCB melts in IFB after certain years melts and trickles into the machine due to poor quality........

it is the bad quality of the compound which melts and falls on the door switch and gets jammed and machine malfunctions ...if you replace the switch it works but again the same happens after some time and repeats...

to prevent the leakage of the defective compound i suggest you the following measure ....

"ONLY IF YOU ARE QUALIFIED "

REMOVE THE DOOR SWITCH AND CLEAN THE AREA WITH ISO PROPYL ALCHOHAL OR ACETONE ...

REMOVE THE CONTROLLER PCB..IF POSSIBLE SCRUB THE EXCESS DRIP OF COMPOND..

BUY 2 OR 3 CANDLES OF GLUE GUN ..MELT THEM AND POUR THEM ON THE PCB TO PREVENT FURTHER MELTING DOWN AND LEAKAGE.. THIS GLUE WILL PREVENT THE FURTHER MELTING / DRIPPING...

BUT TO CLEAN THE ALREADY LEAKED DRIP AROUND THE DOOR SEAL AND OTHER AREAS IT IS VERY DIFFICULT..

WE CANNOT EXPECT THIS QUALITY PRODUCT FROM IFB AFTER PAYING SO MUCH OF MONEY..

Thanks for the detailed response. In my case, after a lot of discussions and to-and-fros, they replaced the PCB and suggested me to put voltage stabiliser.

Hi Everyone,

I am experiencing the same problem. The waterproof coating over the controller circuit melted and started dripping down. The main reason for this is high input voltage. Even if I install a new board, the problem won't be solved unless I install a voltage stabilizer. My neighbor also experienced the same problem and the new board is also expensive around 5000 INR.

The voltage regulator in the board usually generates a lot of heat when it gets an input voltage of more than 230V. In many other appliances, aluminium fins will be added to these regulators to dissipate the heat properly. Sadly, in this case, the voltage regulators are enclosed and covered with a waterproof coating. This is a poor design from IFB. there are many other methods for heat dissipation.

I am gonna raise this issue to IFB and will try to sort it out. For now, I am gonna install a voltage stabilizer and clean the melted coating.

Thank you.

voltage stabilisor installing is a better option

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

which voltage stabilizer can use for washing machine

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

A voltage stabilizer isn't going to solve this problem.

A voltage stabilizer only serves to keep the supply voltage to the unit within specifications.

Obviously, the conformal coating is the problem and it has nothing to do with supply voltage.

The coating that I have seen that is used in the USA will not deteriorate and "run".

The problem is bad coating. If it can be removed and replaced with a better product, that is the solution.

I have 8+ year old IFB. The board leak issue occurs mainly due to heat as indian summers were hot and humid. I regularly service and for first six years I kept machine indoor in cool place. And I had seen the coating suddenly changed color and started dripping when we shifted house where I kept it in balcony with direct sunlight. This is nothing to do with voltage stabilizer. I have voltage stabilizer installed from day one sold by IFB. IFB Parts quality are very substandard and service guys are cheats who will all always quote issues to sell something. Once your amc is over they will force you to buy and spare price they will quote high falsely to make you buy amc

I also have the same issue after using ifb washing machine by 3 yrs.

In before that also I used IFB machine n it's second one. I didn't face the consequences in the first machine. But 2018 model after the usage of 3 yrs its melting from the PCB board n dripping on the door n in the cleaning area of water outlet. Very worst manf bt IFB machine now a days...

Now it's not working, the sound change, door not closing properly, so machine not able to start.....
