I bought a second hand camera and it came without the SD card, when I tried the card I use for my elph 330, it said there was a memory card error so I bought a smaller storage size and it was an older version, it still says memory card error. The memory card is not locked, I'm unsure what to do.

According to the user manual for the camera it supports an MMC (multimedia card) (examples only) having a storage capacity of up to 512MB i.e. 0.512GB.
Your Elph 330 camera supports SD cards.
MMC cards will work in an SD card slot but SD cards will not work in an MMC card slot
