Keyboard and trackpad failure

One morning my keyboard and trackpad stopped working. External keyboard and mouse worked fine. I put in a new trackpad wire but still didn’t fix the problem. However I found that only when the trackpad wire is disconnected, the keyboard backlight will turn on. I wonder what’s the problem, many thanks.
