How to troubleshoot misbehaving superdrive

My Mac Pro 2.66g dual core with Pioneer superdrive dvr-111D will open and accept and eject discs but won't read them. I can't even hear the drive spin up when a disc is installed. How can I troubleshoot to see what the problem is before going to the trouble of trying to replace it?

Mine had a gnarled textile and didn't read CD's anymore. When it started to stop reading DVDs as well, I tried cleaned it up.

I used a CD Laser lens cleaner. Not a DVD one, a CD. Put it in iTunes, and played it as the voice instructed me. Then I wrapped my glasses cleaning cloth around a thin plastic card and gently pushed it in the DVD, moved it slightly and pulled out. Gave another run with the CD Laser Lens, and it resumed working.

I believe the CD Laser Lens Cleaner would be enough, though.
