MBP turns off immediately after charger disconnected

Hi Community,

My MBP (15" retina, late 2013) has started to turn off immediately when the magsafe charger is disconnected. It won't show any sign of life when the power chord is disconnected, and shut off immediately when I detach the charger.

The battery was at about 86% when this issue has presented. I know it was about time to replace it but the sudden appearance of this issue makes me think if there is indeed a problem with the charger or the culprit is some other hardware (motherboard, or magsafe board?).

So, I would like to exclude any other hardware issue them before replacing the battery.

Anyway, I googled and tried to reset SMC and PRAM. nothing changed.

I also opened it and disconnected the battery pin from the motherboard, waited a little bit and the reconnected everything.

here is a Coconutbattery screenshot for you:

I also ran apple system diagnostic and it seems to point to a problem with the charger.

Also, no water damage as far as I know, I got it second hand in 2019 and no issue so far.

If you have any suggestion, it is more than welcome.

all the best,

Hi @danj,

Thank you very much for your support.

I replaced the battery with the one sent from ifixit store and it works perfectly.

Very grateful for the help

Well this Battery is the original one that came with the system, while the cycle count is not too bad, the batteries chemistry degrades with age which is the case here. As you can see the Batteries status is Poor. Time for a fresh battery!

Hi Dan,

Thanks for the reply.

Would you also recommend replacing the thermal paste of CPU while I am at it or it is unnecessary?

@bearghi - It wouldn’t hurt as long as you don’t over do it! I often encounter systems which are just loaded with TIM! It doesn’t take that much to do the job. We only want a small peas worth as it will spread out covering the surface of the chip and we don’t want it going over the edge wetting the Green carrier board and the small caps on it as the TIM will alter there function.

I would focus on the dust within the fans and heatsink fins first. Once working install a good monitoring App like TG Pro so you can see more clearly see your systems heat and heatsinks systems cooling between the fans effectiveness and heat buildup.
