Can a hard drive in an optical drive caddy be used as the main drive?

The previous owner removed all the fittings for the main drive, and the main drive cable is broken, so I wondered if a drive in the optical drive caddy could be used as the main (only) drive? I only ever see references to using it as a second drive.

I have never tried this myself, but I don't see why not. Even with the Optical drive installed, it's still possible to set that as a boot option, and theoretically, it could be set as the default startup disk if you installed macOS onto it.
