Front panel and output tray stopped working

My printer used to work great. Then the front panel and output tray stopped working. Now, I am receiving the error message "The control panel is closed. Raise the control panel until it stops." Then I receive "Output tray is closed." "Open the output tray completely by pulling it with your hand."

The only way I can use my printer is if I am nearby to open these so it will print.

What is wrong? Can this be fixed?
