Start up issues- flickering screen.

My computer just started flickering between the passcode screen and the start up screen when i open it from sleeping (closed). I can force it to shut down by holding the power button and then restart it, it boots up fine.

I haven’t been able to find this particular issue in searches and am hoping someone here might know what is happening and what i need to do to repair.

I am now only able to use it when connected to the power-cord- i gave s new battery coming to replace the current one. (Not sure if this could be related to the flickering)

Thanks in advance for all help.

I'm not sure if the poor condition battery is related to the flickering issue. If it only occurs after waking from sleep if might have to do with your sleep/wake settings. It would be a good idea to try restoring the default settings. You could also try an SMC reset or NVRAM reset. As a last resort you could try reinstalling the OS. Good luck!

Given the systems age it’s likely the battery is just too old. Install this gem of an App to check your batteries health CoconutBattery

I actually already installed that after looking through other forum questions. This battery is showing 0 health.

@daphnevega - Bingo! You need a new battery.

The flickering is do to the backlight doesn't have power stabilization logic so as the MagSafe contacts break contact due to dirt the system will flicker when dependent on AC power. Also note some actions will require more power than the MagSafe charger can offer so even with a clean MagSafe the power demand of the CPU can disrupt the backlight power needs.

Thanks, Dan- I am glad to get some consensus that it is the battery- that I am already prepared to replace. I love this laptop and am hoping for a few more good years out of it. :)
