Dropped my phone and now half of the screen is glitched, how do I fix?

I dropped my phone on hardwood by floor and after the screen completely glitched and now half of it is kind of black-ish and white-ish. Can I fix this by myself or would I need to get it fixed?

Hi punky,

If you can work a screwdriver then yes, it is something you can fix by yourself, and you've come to the right place to find out how to replace the screen, which is what will fix your problem.

First you'll need a set of step by step instructions to show you what to do. Here you go.

iPhone XR Screen Replacement - iFixit Repair Guide

Just be very careful when transferring the earpiece speaker assembly from the old screen to the new one; it's part of the Face ID system and if you damage it then only Apple can fix it so Face ID will work again.

Otherwise pick yourself up a screen and a sheet or two of precut adhesive to glue the screen back on and seal it up once you're done and you should be good. If you buy the screen from iFixit, I'd suggest opting for the Fix Kit since it comes with all the tools needed to do the job for just an extra $5 USD.

As noted in the guide, your True Tone function will cease to be available when you change the screen. That can be fixed by using a device programmer to copy a small piece of data from the old screen to the new one, but it requires a programmer. I bought one myself and if I recall correctly I believe it cost me about $85 USD. Not really cost effective for a one time use if you ask me. You may be able to find a local shop that can copy that data for you; I wouldn't think it would be too expensive if you brought in the old and new screens already disconnected from the phone. Here's a guide with more information about that.
