How to know if the cooling system is working properly

How much coolant is being lost from the system?
Can you see where the coolant is leaking from e.g. stains on engine, hoses radiator cap etc?
Is there white smoke coming from the exhaust occasionally indicating a head gasket problem.
What is the year model of the vehicle?
