Repair, disassembly, and troubleshooting information for the Steam Deck with LCD display, a handheld gaming console made by Valve, released on February 25, 2022. Identified by model number 1010.

Steam Deck Cpu/Gpu Throttle to 400mhz after upgrading SSD.

I recently upgraded the internal nvme to a corsair mp600 mini, which was installed correctly. After reimaging the Deck and installing all upgrades, downloaded my games, and it seems that the cpu is throttling to 400mhz and does not go beyond 15 fps in verified games. The nvme works well with all downloads and speeds and is able to be recognized by the system. The temperatures never get beyond 50-60 degrees, and I also tried going into battery storage mode which did not solve the issue. Nothing appears to have been damaged during installation. Is this a software issue and how can it be fixed?

I just got it fixed, replaced the fan. You should check if RPMs have strange behavior. (changing drastically from 0 to high numbers or alike)

@andrezpassera I have a similar issue to this, my CPU throttles after a while - My fan seem to operate normally though. What do you mean by "0 to high number"? As my fan spin at 7000+ RPM when the CPU is very hot, but does not seem to cool it properly, and I can hear the fan spin at a very high RPM so its not just the "performance view" on the Steam Deck that says it does. Can also feel the "airflow" is pretty high at the vent.

My theory has been after I changed the thermal paste that it might be a "coolant" leak in the copper heatsink part so I have ordered a new heatsink.

Hey!

My Steam Deck's fan was going from 0 to 7000 RPM, then dropping to 300, then rising to 5000, and then dropping again to 100. These jumps happened in intervals of about 5 seconds. That behavior really caught my attention; it didn’t stay stable. That’s why I decided to buy a replacement fan, swapped it out, and the problem stopped happening. Now my Steam Deck is at 100%. I also took the opportunity to change the thermal paste. Let me know if your thermal paste change did the trick!

@andrezpassera Thanks for the reply! Good that solved it for you, my fan does not behave like that so I am crossing my fingers for it to be solvable with a heatsink swap. Will reply when I get the heatsink and install it

After I replaced the eXtremeRate case of my Steam Deck O LED by myself, I also encountered the problem that the CPU was throttled to 399mhz while the fan was working. Updating the BIOS and replacing the radiator didn't solve this problem either. If there is a solution to this problem, please share it with me.

@andrezpassera Reporting back - I received my new replacement heatsink today, and that solved my problem!

Temperature hovers around 65c to 70c and the fan does not spin higher than 3000rpm (In the game I have used to test this Halo MCC Reach if interested) While before I replaced my heatsink the steam deck got to 90c and 99c almost immediately after starting gameplay.

So now I am pretty sure that my copper heatpipe on the heatsink had a "microscopic" leak that the "gas/liquid" in the heatpipe evaporated slowly over time.
