bought and installed new SSD, but it doesn't show up on bootup

I installed a new SSD in my macbook pro, but when I turn on the computer, it doesn't show up. I can't see it in disk utility or anything. I'm sure it's seated properly.

I vaguely remember something about maybe having to make it bootable or formatting it with another computer before installing it?

I don't know, but at this point I'm out of ideas.

Any one have any guesses?

Can you help us help you!

We really need to know which of the many models of MacBook Pro systems Apple has made. Once we know we can help you!

Updated! It’s a1398

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@gmichaelson - Well…we’re getting warmer😁the A1398 tells us you have a 15” retina system which covers a range of systems from 2012 to 2015!

Apple made quite a few changes within this series. Think it like a car, a Mustang from 2012 is very different to the 2015!

But let’s move on… what is the SSD you bought?

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

Here’s a good reference The Ultimate Guide to Apple’s Proprietary SSDs While this just covers Apple SSDs you can see how the different years drives have did Derek performance and some won’t work as the interface is not the same.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

It's a mid-2015 MBP. Serial number is C02Q9E70G8WN.

The SSD I bought is: OWC Aura Pro X2 SSD

The site seems to indicate that it's compatible with this laptop.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

OK, that helps a lot! I’ve corrected your system tag so you can click on it to get to the guides. Here’s the guide for your system MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2015 SSD Replacement

Yes, the OWC X2 SSD is a good drive! So if the drive is correctly installed, the next task is you need to be using High Sierra or newer on your system before you swap out the drive as the systems firmware was upgraded between Sierra and High Sierra. That’s not to say you can’t still move forward! It’s just a bit harder.

So… if you are running with HS then you should be able to boot up in Internet Recovery, here’s a good Apple TN that explains the startup keys: Mac startup key combinations and this is what you need to focus on How to reinstall macOS

You may want to create a USB thumb drive using a second Mac, I find that works best! Setting up a bootable OS installer drive. This also allows you to stay at an older release (High Sierra being the oldest). Here’s where you can down load the OS How to download and install macOS and here’s hold to build the bootable installer Create a bootable installer for macOS
