Why is my screen not working?

My screen for the laptop will not display, the keyboard will light up. I tried to do a LED test but it still wouldn’t turn on. I disconnected and reconnected the battery cable and it still doesn’t turn on!

Hi @zach48664

Troubleshooting steps.

  • Try getting into BIOS on startup (press F2 a few times very soon after starting the laptop) and check if there's a display showing. If you can't get into BIOS with a display is the laptop passing POST (Power On Self test) when starting?

If there is a display in BIOS then there may be a problem with the discrete Nvidia GPU. For the BIOS display the integrated Intel GPU is used.

  • Connect an external monitor (TV?) to the laptop's HDMI port and check if there a display on it when the laptop has be turned on and booted into the OS. Don't forget to press Fn +F8 (both together) to switch the display between the laptop screen only, the external screen only or both on together.

If there is a display on the external monitor, switch the display back to the laptop screen and then try shining a flashlight at an angle close to the laptop screen and check for any images. They will be very faint if they are there, so try this in a darkened room to help see them.

If you can see images, then there's a backlight problem with the screen. This could be either due to a faulty backlight power supply circuit on the motherboard, a faulty video cable or a problem in the screen itself.

If you can't see any images there may be a problem on the motherboard.

If there is no display on the external monitor there may be a problem on the motherboard or the laptop is not passing POST
