Model A1040 / 10, 15, 20, 30, or 40 GB hard drive / four touch-sensitive LED backlit buttons above touch wheel

upgrade hard drive from 15GB to 40GB

Can I upgrade the hard drive in my iPod 3rd generation (model A1040) with 15GB to 40GB? Do I need to replace the back cover or anything else?

Thanks in advance.

ddo, the 3rd Generation iPods can use any of the 10, 15, 20, 30 and 40GB Toshiba pin type 1.8" drives that end in 004, such as MK2004GAL. The 30 and 40GB drives require deeper back plates. Hope this helps, good luck.

That doesn't quite answer the question. Will a 40GB drive fit into a 15GB case?

Not sure what it did not answer "30 and 40GB drives require deeper back plates"
