What is the model number of the player?

Have you tried using a different known working disc, in case the disc is faulty?

Is the DVD disc type compatible with the player e.g. possibly dvd-r dvd+r etc?

Have you tried cleaning the laser lens with a commercial dvd/cd lens cleaner kit (examples only)?
