The battery icon shows a black X?

I bought a battery replacement kit from here. Originally my laptop would show 85% but then die if unplugged from the charger. After replacing my battery and following the instructions given, my laptop still needs to be plugged into a charging source at all times. The battery icon now shows a black "X" and no battery percentage. I tried to recalibrate the battery as the instructions say and left my laptop for 2+ hours charging but it is still showing an 'X' on the battery icon.
