Corroded USB-C Port Causing Issues With Display

Hi all, I started having glitchy issues with my Retina display. Seemed to be worse with lots of darker colours on the right hand side of the monitor. Also at first the glitches seemed to go away if I closed the display a bit. This didn't last long and the glitches got worse.

As the monitor was replaced in the last few years and under warranty I sent it in to Apple to be repaired. They tell me the display is fine but there is a USB-C port that is corroded and messing with the motherboard and I would need a whole new motherboard to fix the problem. As I can buy a second hand one of the same cheaper than the fix it seems a bit crazy to do that.

I'm hoping there's a way around this. Can I just disconnect the offending USB-C port to see if the issue still occurs or can I replace it with a new one instead of replacing the whole motherboard?

Anyone else had this issue or have any advice?

Cheers,

Tao

Got the image of the corroded port. Sadly they couldn't;t tell which on it was before sending it back to me Hopefully it's obvious when I open it up.

Depends on where the damage is. But if it’s just the port, and not the board component, these are a separate little flex cable. It’s a really cheap repair but it’s quite a bit of labor because you’ll want to take the board out. But It’s definitely possible this is the case. It would be weird. But not unheard of.

Thanks for getting back to me. I just tried to get the image of the corroded port but they have taken the report down since I asked for the laptop to be sent back. From memory the photo looked like the inside of the port itself had the corrosion. So maybe there's hope. I'd be happy to just disconnect the port as there are 2 others I can use.
