It's most likely the laser that is faulty but to replace the whole drive is much easier especially if you don't have to much experience. Either way it is a relatively straight forward job, lots of videos online and most likely tutorials on this site. You can buy the drive as a complete kit online, you just need to swap the board at the bottom of your faulty drive to the new drive.
Also to note, if the warranty stickers have been removed then there is the possibility that the drive board I referred to above has already been swapped out and the one installed isn't the original and therefore even if the laser was replaced it all wouldn't play a disc.
