unexpected shutdown despite battery replacement

Half a year ago, I went to a third party technician because I was experiencing unexpected shutdowns. My battery health was 85% at the time. I thought it would just be a simple battery replacement, but they said it was a logic board problem, so I had it repaired. Three months passed and I was having unexpected shutdowns again at increasing rates, so I took it to the same shop and they said I needed to have my battery replaced, which I did. Unfortunately, I can't see the battery health now since it was replaced with a third party battery. After a month, I experienced unexpected shutdowns and the shop replaced the battery for free saying it was faulty. But immediately after I got my phone back, I had unexpected shutdowns again. I took it back to the shop, but they didn't encounter the problem at all, and assured me that the battery and logic board were okay. I took my phone home and it was fine at first, then I experienced unexpected shutdowns again at increasing rates.

I have tried factory resetting and restoring from back-up, but the problem remains. Is this a software problem or an undiagnosed hardware problem? I was thinking of taking it to another shop to get a second opinion.

Hello! That's the thing though, there's no panic log whatsoever. Just a low battery log, but then the phone just shuts off at about 20%. Though I have tried hard resetting my phone but I keep seeing "Boot failure count: 1".

Unfortunately, it appears that your battery health is gone for good. As of the iPhone XS, Apple started pairing batteries with logic boards so that if you don't have Apple or an authorized repair center replace the battery you lose your battery health and get the non-genuine warning even if you use a genuine Apple battery.

So far the only way around that is to buy a battery without the Battery Management System (BMS) on it and transfer the one from your original battery onto the replacement cell. The battery statistics can then be reset and you'd be all set.

Of course, it appears your original battery is long gone, so that won't help you now; only Apple can fix that at this point, although you could use their self repair program as long as you buy the battery from them and rent their tools to do the job. I assume there's no chance of getting your original battery back from the shop, is there?

None of which helps you with your shutdown problem though. Alisha, (@flannelist) have you run into anything like this?

Sounds like it may be time for a second opinion. I'm not sure if Apple will help you or not after having the battery replaced by a non-authorized shop.

@tech_ni Yeah, just checked and it appears the oldest phone that's supported on the self service program is an iPhone 12. So the rest of us are just plain S.O.L.

@anonymousotter Does the phone just shutdown? Or it restarts? It sounds the same, but it;’s not. A panic usually tiggers a restart. But if it’s just shutting down, that’s a probably an issue with power delivery. Do you know what the shop did when they said they fixed the board?

@flannelist The phone just shuts down. It doesn't restart. When I try to turn it back on, it will tell you to connect to charger. It turns back on when I connect to power and the battery percentage is about the same as when it died. So, it's battery is never zero.

The shop didn't tell me exactly they did with the board, but they called it a bootloop problem. I don't agree with the term they used though because the phone doesn't restart, it just powers off.

What do you think? Does an issue with power delivery lie with the logic board or with the battery?

Was it the same shutdown behavior before they installed the new battery? Just trying to suss out of I think this is the same issue, or a new issue.

It sounds like what’s happening is there’s something weird with regard to battery data or charging. This could still just be they put a garbage battery in to replace your original one. Or the battery is just faulty.

But if the behavior is exactly the same as before they did the initial repair, then I would wager its an issue with something else.

I think taking it to a second shop is a smart idea given that the issue doesn’t seem fully resolved. The additional attempt at repair wherein they fixed something on the board also adds a lot of variables so it will be difficult to diagnose without either hands on, or some images of the device’s internals.
