Revamped version of the iPhone 3G with faster processing speeds. Repair of this device is similar to the 3G, and requires simple screwdrivers and prying tools. Model A1303 / 8, 16 or 32 GB capacity / black or white plastic back.

iPhone 3GS with unresponsive power button and stuck up recovery mode

Hi

I have an iphone 3GS with its power button not working. When I took out the phone after one year and charged it, I found the phone was stuck in recovery mode with a display 'connect to iTunes'. I tried all the procedures to come out of the recovery mode to bring the phone back to normal condition but to no avail, I tried a third party software Tenorware Share ReiBoot on Trial version. When everything seemed to be going fine, at the completion stage of software and firmware verification, alas, there came a pop out , that my iphone has a problem! And the operation got aborted.

Can anyone throw some light on this? Is it because of the non-function of the power button? Unless the button is set right or replaced one can not hope to resolve the problem?

Hi Daniel,

First sorry for the late reply. I do not understand your suggestion try disconnecting the power button and use 3utool to exit recovery mode.As such the power button is not at all responsive. Then what is the point in disconnecting. To disconnect I must tear down the phone. If I am to attempt that and be 'successful' I can as well replace it and avoid all these hassles.

By the way when I tried to exit recovery mode by using 3utool, it says it can not be done because the iphone is not in recovery mode! I thought it is stuck in recovery mode.Actually it is stuck in 'connect to iTunes' mode.I am confused.

Some of the software applications claim that my problem can be resolved by going to DFU mode, even if the power button is broken or non-functional. I tried one such software Redsn0w but at the final stage of opening the ipsw file Redsn0w stops working! Moreover the Redsn0w alerts that after the DFU mode is successfully achieved the iphone screen will turn completely black. It is silent on how to come out of it.I am afraid I will be stuck in DFU mode instead of iTunes stuck mode! Anyway Redsn0w had failed and I was saved from that encounter!

As I had already mentioned in my previous post I tried Reiboot with their free trial version and when it has entered the final process i.e., 'your iphone has been reset to factory settings' there pops a message in iTunes that 'your iphone has a problem!.Go to Apple service center'. I am really lost.

If somebody categorically say that there is no way to bring the phone back to normal without setting it right or replacing the power button, I will not go crazy going in rounds, be grateful.

Thanks.

download 3utool from here, http://www.3u.com/. then see if the phone will connect to it

The button might be permanently on causing the connect to iTunes screen. As @tech_ni says you'll have to disconnect the home button connector then try turning the phone on. I'd say you're probably better replacing the battery too.

Connect to iTunes means you will have to restore your phone back to factory. If apple will still connect to the phone. Apparently phones of a certain age were dropped from the apple servers but I could be wrong.
