Can I use a generic device to operate the drawer locks and bins, without going through the proprietary software? I purchased a surplused G4,

Steven Rose if it is anything like the Pyxis I have been working on, there is not really a good way. The addresses for the drawers etc. are all part of the software. Without the software, you do not get the desired drawer opening etc. unless you can code and write it yourself. You will need the right addresses for the drawers etc.
