Any tool to repair my WD My Passport

My device led light comes on but my Mac doesn't recognize the drive. Is there any tool to repair my external 1TB WD My Passport hard drive?

Hard drives are basically not repairable at all, especially if the failure happened inside of the sealed drive enclosure.

You can try finding out if it is a bad controller board, for example a bad connector, blown out fuse or power regulator, those can be component level repaired, beyond that, pretty much nothing.

As stated, the HDD itself is not repairable. However, there is an interface board inside that external enclosure from the HDD connector to the USB connector. If that is bad, you can put the HDD into another external enclosure. The trick will be to get that enclosure open. However, I have not seen one go bad, but you may be lucky.

Those WD retail USB drives are sometimes designed with USB directly placed on the HDD controller board, nasty costdown choice.

@tomchai All my external drives are standard SATA off the shelf drives with USB external drive enclosure. Never had one fail in20 years.

My first question would be are you trying to get the drive back to working state to keep on using it or is there any important data you need to recover? If it's the latter and you're in the US - send it to someone like northridgefix.com and they'll figure a way to help.

But what others are saying could be true as well - you may be lucky and may have a damaged controller board that could be swapped or even a misbehaving cable that should be double-checked.

Hope that helps 🙂
