Optical drive from 2009 MacBook incompatible in Late 2011 MacBook Pro?

Hi all, i swapped the (working) disc drive from a Late 2009 MacBook into a my Late 2011 MacBook Pro that had a broken drive and all it does is take the disc then spit it back out again, is the drive just incompatible? or is there something i could do?

I haven't tested the original drive from the 2011 in another Mac, but could it be that the logic board has an issue with disc drives?

Hi

Have you considered that the issue could be caused by a bad optical drive cable?

As you said it could also be a logicboard issue but it might be worth trying a different cable

I don’t think it would be a compatibility issue as optical disk drives are like hard drives ,they all use SATA so they are all basically interchangeable

Hopefully this helps

Any questions please ask

Thanks:-)

Apple changed vendors and the drives firmware a few times as such some won’t work across different series.

Compare what you have across these two lists.
