Released in May of 2019, the Xbox One S All Digital Edition (model number 1681) is a revision to the Original Xbox One S (released in 2016). This model of Xbox One S ships with no Blu-Ray Disc Drive (thus there is no disc slit at the front), exclusively providing downloadable and streamable entertainment.

Replaced hard drive and cannot restore. Was in the Insider program.

I have an Xbox One S digital that suffered an HDD failure so I replaced it with another and downloaded the OSU from Microsoft's website ad followed all instructions to set up the new drive but I cannot get the OSU to restore and am getting error "E101 00000504 8B50041" which from my research I have concluded that this is due to attempting to restore an older OS than what was installed before. I was in the Xbox delta insider preview and I cannot find any way to get Insider OSUs from anywhere. Is my only choice to wait until the beta becomes publically released and then restore or are there other options? I did "downgrade" from the stock 1TB HDD to a 500GB HDD I had but I haven't read that downgrading storage can cause any issues. If there is anything else I need to add let me know, please. Thank you in advanced.

The OSU is not really intended to reinstall the operating system in its entirety. It's intended to update an existing install. It alone, in my recollection, will not get you a full install of the operating system regardless of what was on the drive previously.

It's been a few years since I did this for my own drive, so I cannot remember exactly. But as I recall I ended up using a combination of this technique, the OSU and sheer luck to upgrade the HDD in my XBOX One.

I already solved this issue - you need to disable insider program on that console, then restart- it should then update itself to the proper version you need - now you may proceed on putting the SSD or HDD and updating with the USB - only issue I have is, idk if I can redownload the insider program updates back on it without issues 😕

Thanks for the solution but sadly the original hard drive was dead so reverting was not an option. I ended up using Alisha C's solution which worked fabulously.
