Display dead after battery replacement

I followed these instructions with a new iFixit battery for my early-2013 MBP. It was working fine (other than the battery not holding charge) when I started (it's all backed up, that's not the issue, I just want to be able to use this old friend).

After reassembly, I connected magsafe to AC, and the machine immediately chimed. However, the screen remains completely black.

Here's what I know: on connection, the magsafe charging led is green, then turns orange; the CapsLock led is active; I can power down (no CapsLock led) and back on (chimes, CapsLock led working) with the power button; I've reset SMC and PRAM with the button + powercycle combinations; there's no signal on the hdmi port (the monitor I connected to does not see a signal); I've disassembled and reinserted the display data cable twice (Step 29 in attached instructions).

Does anyone have a suggestion about something I could try next? Thanks in advance -- wylbur.

Using a flashlight pressed against the screen at a sharp angle are you able to see a faint image of your desktop and its icons?

Thanks for this idea.

I just checked 2 different flashlights, and no, the screen has nothing on it (it would be a login screen I think but I can't see a colored background or anything else).

What happens if you disconnect the battery and try to power it on with just the MagSafe charger plugged in?

@Duck great question! I will need to get back to my shop to test this, I hope to have an answer in 24h.

At this point I would re-connect your old battery to see if that altered things.

Ah, regrettably removing the battery was destructive. As I detached the battery cells from the adhesive (even with a liberal use of the solvent) connecting them to the chassis, I wrecked their cables. Alas, this might not have been a successful repair. Thanks for your thoughts.
