honda fit flashing drive icon and refusing to engage drive

upon starting the car, sometimes it flashes the drive icon on the dashboard and wont engage in drive until i switch it off and start it again. how do i solve this problem.

How old is the car battery? Standby battery voltage should be around 12.5vdc with alternator outputting 14.5vdc. Rule out main power and connections before moving on.
