Try connecting an external monitor to the laptop and check if its display is OK
If it is then with the PC on, try shining a flashlight at an angle close to the display and check if you can see any images at all (Windows desktop?). They will be very faint if there are any to be seen, so trying this in a darkened room may help to see them.
If you can see images then there's a backlight problem with the display. This could be caused by a faulty backlight power circuit on the motherboard, a problem with the video cable between the motherboard and the display or a problem in the display itself. Further testing would be required to find out what the problem is.
What is the full model number of the laptop as shown on the info label on the bottom of the laptop. There are several versions of the X1 carbon laptop e.g. gen 1, Gen 2, Gen 7 etc and if it comes to finding replacement parts knowing the exact variant will help
